The fish auction
Presentation
At the entrance to the old port, where the fishing boats unload their fish, stands the auction house.
Known as a “criée” in French, the term dates from the time when there were several different port merchants where selling was done verbally and loudly. The Sète fishing fleet is mainly made up of family-owned boats.
Every afternoon, 14 trawlers use the services of the auction house to sell more than 80 different species of fish. The auction system enables up to 800 crates an hour to be sold.
The proximity of the auction house to the fishing port and the speed with which the fish are sold and delivered means they can be on the market the day after being caught.
